Cytokine that stimulates red blood cell production (erythropoiesis) in the bone marrow. It regulates erythrocyte levels and stimulates late erythroid progenitor cells to form small colonies of erythrocytes which eventually become mature red blood cells. (Adapted from ICRP Publication 118, 2012)
